Is my child ready for school?
This is definitely a question a lot of parents ask and one that many teachers ponder about every year. The age that children start more formal education differs around the world and there is a lot of interesting research and evidence that debate the age for this. However, in the UK, starting in Reception for a large majority of children starts the September after their 4th birthday and for some children they will have only just turned 4.
It will be of no surprise that there is not a definite answer to this question, as children are unique: growing and developing at their own rates. But there are activities and experiences that you can support your child with securing before the big day in September to help them be ready.
Suggestions from the ZestLab Team:
- Put on and do up their own coat
- Put on a jumper
- Dress and undress themselves
- Used to putting on and off welly boots
- Eat with a knife and fork
- Peel an orange or bannana
- Use the toilet with little adult support
- Wash their hands
- Know their surname
- Know and write the letter that starts their name
- Carry a back pack
- Know when to say please and thank you
- Blow own nose
** Please remember - that all children develop at their own pace, your child may be working at securing these or they may have their own unique development needs.
